Was Cleopatra truly a great beauty?
Legends suggest it. Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under her spell, yet British archeaologists believe otherwise. Apparently the silver coins they unearthed which bear her image show her features to be ordinary according to modern standards. Then why did Caesar and Mark Anthony fall for her?
Maybe in those days, that sort of look was considered very beautiful. 17th century paintings by Ruben depicted beautiful women to be plump by today's standards. The only thing that is considered beautiful throughout the ages and across cultures is a healthy skin. After all, beauty is skin deep.
Then again, it could be more than looks alone that seduced the men. Cleopatra was also known for her intelligence and charisma. That too must have formed a large part of her sex appeal. She knew how to use what was available to increase her attractiveness. Legend has it that when she visited Mark Anthony, she had the sails of her ship perfumed with jasmine. The seductive scent of jasmine greeted Mark Anthony as she approached him. Smart move. Jasmine is a reputed aphrodisiac.
Cleopatra was aware of the skin beautifying and health giving properties of aloe vera too. Queen Cleopatra, Queen Nefertiti and other great beauties are said to have incorporated aloe vera into their daily regime. Cleopatra is said to have bathed in goats milk daily.
Milk is rich in lactic acid, an AHA which exfoliates old skin to reveal the younger skin beneath. Milk is also rich in oils which soften and smoothen the skin. A daily milk bath would lead to soft, healthy skin that is considered beautiful in all cultures.
Aloe vera is a renown skin healer. It is rich in antioxidants which fight aging. It also heals inflammation and skin diseases, so using aloe vera would make skin healthier.
You could take a leaf out of the Egyptian queen's book. Incorporate milk baths and aloe vera based products into your lifestyle. Use perfumes with jasmine so you'll have the allure that made Cleopatra so famous.
